As a new platform for cross-domain intelligent combat, the ground–air cooperative unmanned system provides an important direction for competition in military technology among the world’s powers. First, this paper summarizes the concept, function, and goals of development of the ground–air cooperative unmanned system, and analyzes plans for the development of such systems around the world. The significance of the ground-air cooperative unmanned system is systematically summarized from three perspectives: forming an intelligent combat system, changing the attack-defense balance on the battlefield, and improving combat effectiveness. Second, in view of the constraints imposed by complex environments, resources, and the heterogeneity of platforms, such key technologies as distributed situational awareness, adaptive intelligent navigation, and cooperative control of heterogeneous systems are addressed. Finally, to deal with the challenge of intelligent warfare, suggestions for development are proposed from the perspectives of technological bottlenecks, platform construction, and policy support. This study provides a reference for the development and application of ground–air cooperative unmanned systems in the context of national defense science and technology.
